Moral Character
Is it me or does television make every man seem like a dog? I am watcing Brothers & Sisters, which revolves around a deceased pater familias and the impact of his philandering on his family. In this episode one of his sons decides to continue an affair with his subordinate. I guess like father like son. But why must television enforce this idea the every man is a dick? Maybe, it is the case. As a man I would hope that a majority of us a better than that. I would hope that the majority of us could be great husbands and dads. Honestly, after watching as many movies and tv shows as I have, I am not sure. So the king is seeking guest contributions on the following: Is every man a dick?

Hopefully what I write makes sense. It's 1240am, im typing this on my phone, I'm tired & I'm just returning from the airport from a much needed mini-vacation.
I would like to think that every man has that "dick" personality in them. But there are only those that have the will, that control to be a great husband, dad, and overall a good person. We all have those moments where slip and falter, but what matters is if you have the mentality to get up, brush yourself off, amend your mistakes and move forward. I would agree that tv likes to show this weakness but they fail to realize that we're better than that...at least some of us are. I'm glad to say that a majority of my true friends are great ppl and I hope they know it.
Well...i think I might have to disagree, a little. It does not take "control" to be a great husband or a strong will to know what to do... It's called growing the f*** up. I think people are too quick to revert to the old argument of "men are dogs" as a way to help justify the behavior that so many men think that they are entitled to embody... The argument that every man has the capability to be a dick doesn't work for me. Men are no more inclined to cheat or screw up as women are no more inclined to love shopping.
Brod, you are right in that movies and tv help perpetuate this belief by constantly showing this type of male behavior, but I feel as if it is done with the exact opposite effect of its original intent. By constantly showing men as philanderers( dogs, pigs, cheaters) it only makes it seem as if this is "typical" male behavior. I mean hell, why not sleep around if everyone says this is what a man should be doing in the first place? (Of course this is faulty logic, but you get the picture)...
Clearly, my need for intellectual stimulation is not being met by teaching my 4th graders, so this was an outlet for me to engage in some "grown-up" dialogue...MY BAD!
I have to be the devil's advocate on this one... Monogamy is unrealistic and a product of social construction, as is idea that men, by nature, are dogs (I shall call this the "canidae complex"). We are all sexual beings and as such are bound to follow our physical instincts--men and women alike. Unfortunately, we have a tendency to over-rationalize our decisions; not to mention, attach emotions to what is ultimately a purely physical act. Hence the feeling of shame/guilt associated with promiscuity. Throw in a legally binding contract like marraige and you've drafted yourself the perfect equation for failure. Sure, the media propagates the canidae complex, but in the end it is merely a product of our own acceptance of social norms. Call me a dog all you want. I'll "grow up" when it becomes a mandate of nature... or I can no longer afford viagra.
